How to apply water slide decals on Gunpla
Water slide decals are thinner than stickers and look printed on when applied well. They take a little practice, so try them on a spare part first.
What you need
- Water slide decal sheet for your kit
- Small cup of lukewarm water
- Tweezers and a hobby knife
- Cotton swabs and paper towel
- Optional: decal softener (Mr. Mark Softer, Micro Sol) and a gloss coat
Step by step
- Cut the decal out close to the print. Less clear film around the design means less visible edge.
- Dip it in water for about 10–20 seconds. Then place it on paper towel and wait until it slides on the backing paper.
- Slide it onto the part. Hold the backing at the edge of the part and push the decal off with a wet brush or swab. Don't lift the decal itself with tweezers.
- Position it while it's wet. A drop of water lets you nudge it into place.
- Press out the water. Roll a cotton swab from the center to the edges to push out water and air bubbles.
- Use softener on curved surfaces. A small amount helps the decal settle into panel lines and curves. Don't touch it while it works.
- Let it dry, then top coat. Give it a few hours, then seal with a top coat to protect the decal and hide the film edge.
Silvering (a shiny haze around the decal) happens when air is trapped under it on a matte surface. Applying decals over a gloss coat, then finishing with matte, prevents it.
